UK Scrambles
Matterhorn Ridge-Winnats Pass

This route is officially graded Vdiff with 2** but like its neighbour Elbow ridge it is very easy for the grade.

Car Parking is allowed on the road from Castleton before the LH turning to Winnats & Speedwell Caverns.

The Pass begins at the cattle grid the first obvious feature on the north side of the pass is Elbow Ridge once you past this Matterhorn Ridge is obvious and impressive 50 yds further up the pass. The route is a series of steep buttress's linked by a ridge giving fine steep scrambling with an abundance of good holds. Despite being a 2** route with easy access there is no sign of polish.

The combination of Elbow Ridge, Matterhorn Ridge & Mam Tor gives a good short day & it can be included with several good walks to make a full day.

I enjoyed this scramble and it certainly has a lot more exposed rock on it than the picture indicates 'supposedly V Diff', well my girlfriend leads V Severe and opted out of the final section on our solo!
