I managed to get out yesterday to investigate a new ghyll scramble I'd heard about. The Afon Goch runs into Llyn Dinas near Beddgelert. A nice short walk in (5mins from the road) and you reach the stream. The lower part was fairly uninteresting and hands barely had to be used. Higher up there were a few more interesting waterfalls to climb at grade 1. It'd be much harder with more water in but runs through some nice scenery. From the top there's a good path thats leads back to the start.
Later on we headed to some cliffs north of Cnicht (the one behind Llyn Llagi) as there were some likely looking streams on the map. We went maybe 50m up the one that runs down from Llyn yr Adar which is in a large gully. It was extremely mossy and we were in thick mist so couldn't see far. Nevertheless, it looked a fairly worthless route.
On the way back down we also had glimpses across the valley to the Afon Merch which flows down from Y Lliwedd. It looked promising so another one for future exploration me thinks.
I do seem to have developed a taste for wet and slimy ghylls and there seems to be a lot of overlooked potential in Snowdonia. |
