Milestone Gully Approach, Tryfan Grade 2

Milestone Gully Approach, Tryfan

The gully bounds the right side of the Milestone Buttress, by the main road on the west face of Tryfan. It can be clearly seen as a dripping black recess beside the crag, and makes a good short scramble to begin a day on Tryfan.

Approach either along the North Ridge path then cross the stile below the Milestone Buttress, or cut across the boulder field from the small car park.

The pull up to the gully is tiring but soon you get onto rock.
The first (avoidable) obstacle is a smooth, wet shelf. Mantleshelf/bellyflop onto this (made easier now by a pile of stones at the base) and continue up the narrowing gully.
Above, take the gully on the left hand side overcoming numerous small steps.

Although the scrambling isn't particularly difficult it is sustained with few good resting places.
Cold water normally runs down the gully too so expect to get wet! After about 50m of scrambling the gully ends above the buttress and you can step out to safe ground.

Now either continue onto the nearby Milestone Continuation (grade 3), or traverse left onto the North Ridge or Heather Terrace.
