Y Gribin is the rocky spur that rises from Glaslyn to Bwlch y Saethau. When combined with Snowdon's East Ridge this gives an excellent day that delivers you right out onto the summit. The walk in can take up to one hour, and allow slightly more than this for the ascent. Begin at Pen-y-Pass by following the Miners' Path up to Glaslyn. Here cross the outflow stream and climb or bypass some short slabs. Walk across a narrow neck of land to arrive at the base of the Y Gribin. Start by scrambling up slabs with a choice of line; the best perhaps slightly to the right. The route is obvious. Continue up with some exposure to the left, with one notable obstacle being a shallow gully. All too soon the scrambling finsihes. Walk uphill to where the Watkin Path leads up to the summit. Ignore the path and instead climb the East Ridge direct. There is some scree and the scrambling is scrappy, but this deposits you right by Yr Wyddfa's summit cairn (to the alarm of those who have taken the train up!). There are many options for the rest of the day. The easiest way down to Pen-y-Pass is via the Pig or Miners' Track. Alternatively, scramble over Crib y Ddysgl and Crib Goch before descending Crib Goch's East Ridge (all grade 1) to rejoin the Pig Track. |
