Traverse of Lliwedd Grade 1 |
A traverse of Lliwedd (898m) makes up the second half of the Snowdon Horseshoe, but the route is also worthwhile on its own. It can be tackled in either direction but is best done west to east to make the most of the scrambling. The whole circuit should take about 5 hours. From Pen-y-Pass the Miners' Track is the quickest way to Snowdon's summit. From here the top scree section of the Watkin Path leads down to Bwlch y Saethau. Walk along this to the base of Lliwedd's north west ridge. The ridge consists of rock steps split by terraces, with a path winding on the right which attempts to avoid difficulties. Ignore this and stick close to the left edge for the exposure and best scrambling. There is a wide choice of line. After a short time the higher West Peak is reached. Cross easily over to the East Peak. Below this, the path continues on the right away from the cliff but continue to hug the crest for the most fun. The gradient soon relaxes and after climbing Lliwedd Bach a path descends northwards in the direction of Llyn Llydaw. The path is not always clear to follow and involves descending some scree and scrambly steps. This side of the mountain lies in shade so is generally wet and greasy too. After the steep descent the path runs down to meet the Miners' Track. Follow this right back to Pen-y-Pass. It should be noted that care should be taken on this scramble. If in doubtful weather stick to the path away from the edge; Lliwedd is the largest cliff in Wales! |
