Idwal Staircase & Continuation, Glyder Fawr Grade 2 |
This is the most difficult of the three scrambles that ascend Glyder Fawr out of Cwm Idwal. The approach is from Ogwen Cottage, taking the left hand path at the lake until you reach the Idwal Slabs. At the end of the main sweep of cliff is a dark overhung cleft. This is the Idwal Staircase. It is worth noting that a stream flows down the staircase so this route is worth saving for a dry spell. Begin by climbing up the steep gully, below the gloomy overhang. The scrambling here is on small ledges, some of which are slippery and lichenous. As you ascend, rock spikes offer handholds. The continuation is less obvious and open to variation. Care must be taken so as not to get into difficulty. First strike uphill over grass until below the rock walls of the upper slabs. One line ascends just left of a steep vegetated couloir. Some steps are steep and exposed but there are flat areas between that provide the chance for a rest, and there are many possible lines. Further up beside the couloir is a collection of huge blocks forming a cave. This is difficult to find but it is possible to crawl in and climb up inside to emerge above. Continuation is impossible here but it is worthwhile to have a look. If this is found then walk left along a narrow terrace to where the rock is less steep and scramble up. Keep climbing with a choice of line until you emerge on Seniors Ridge. The best bet would then be to follow Seniors Ridge to the summit. Otherwise, walk into Cwm Cneifion and follow the path back to Cwm Idwal. |
