Jakes Rake Grade 1***

Jakes Rake

Jakes Jake  Pavey Ark NY286079. aprox 800m from Harrison Stickle

Jakes Rake is one of the Lake Districts most popular scrambles situated above Angel Tarn at the top of Mill Gill in the Langdale Valley

This scramble is one of the most pleasant scrambles around and can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced scramblers.

The approach can be made from the New Dungeon Ghyll Guest House where there is plenty of parking provided by the National Trust.
To start you can take the path behind the pub that will take you up to Angel tarn, or for those of you wishing to make a full day out scrambling then i would recommend scrambling up mill Gill another very popular scramble in the area. Once you are up at the tarn The great wall of Pavey Ark faces you, and this is where you will start Jakes Rake.

Contour the path round to the right of the tarn until you reach the scree slope on the far side below a deep Gully that cuts up the right side of Pavey Ark. Scramble up the scree leftwards to the foot of the cliff where you will see the start of Jakes Rake to your left cutting a small channel into the cliff face.

From here make your way up Jakes Rake, for those of you that feel there is to much exposure then stay close to the cliff wall and scramble deep within the channel.

The exposure on this route is quite high and the risk of a fall would be fatal, so please do take care if you are attempting this in the wet.
The only tricky bit to the scramble is right at the end when the scramble opens out onto a large rock shelf, where you have to make a final climb  up  right to the top of some rather exposed and often slippy rock. Take your time here.

In wet weather a stream runs down here so some of the holds get a bit slippy so be careful. Otherwise a nice scramble to the top.
