The main reason for scrambling up Troughton Beck will be to provide convenient access to much better things on Pike o’Stickle (see elsewhere). Nevertheless, on a hot day the beck provides enjoyable if undemanding entertainment.

From the NT car park at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, walk up Mickleden for a mile or so. Troughton Beck is the first watercourse beyond the face of Pike O’Stickle on your right, you will known you’re then when you come across a very small flag stone bridge over the beck. Pick your way carefully up through the stone wash to a small tree.

Scramblers can then proceed up the bed of the beck over a series of boulders and small rocky cascades. Sadly, the beck seems to have taken a direct hit from a stupendous storm recently and the scenery is not what it was.
