Low Water BeckTo approach this route, the best way would be from the Walna Scar moor car park. Take the old Quarry road to the right and follow this past the Crag called the Bell on your right. (a Grade 1 Scramble and one which could be done on your way) Continue along the road until you come to a sharp bend where the path splits off to the right away from the main path to the summit of Coniston Old Man

Follow the path right down to the pudding stone; from here you can clearly see Low Water beck, and the impressive falls cutting down the face of the crag.

From the pudding stone follow the path down to the wooden footbridge, from here bear left and cross the often wet ground to the base of Low Water Beck. Start the route at the foot of a narrow grove where the stream runs out. Climb the light grey colour rock to the right of the water, until you are come to a small stance just beneath the main water fall.

To escape from here climb the steep wall to your right (do not cross the stream here and attempt the left wall as this is a proper rock climbing route) on good holds to a small terrace of rock and heather. From here traverce right along a very prominent path.

Follow the path upwards until the path takes you back to the water fall, and an exposed rock shelf, facing you on the left is the top of the water fall. Climb the rocky terrace on your right close to the water fall, where the ground becomes less steep over water worn slabs.

Continue to scramble up the gill until you come to a large heathery and grassy terrace, from here the top of the scramble

can just be seen, continue from here by scrambling up a steep wall just ahead to your left, or by traversing further left and upwards scrambling on heather and rock to another small terrace. Here you are faced by the final section of the scramble.

Climb a short wall on your left to where the rocks become a large slab, scramble up here to the top and a well deserved break, or continue to Low Water Tarn for a pleasant view and rest.

If you still have plenty of time on your hands then Brim Fell Slabs scramble (Grade 2*) can be made form the tarn and is a pleasant way to reach the summit of Coniston Old Man.

  1. Low Water Beck is one of the very best. When combined with Brim Fell Slabs, in terms of pure quality, this makes a scrambling outing just about as good as you can get anywhere in Britain.
