Grade 2/3*** 150 m vertical ascent.

Guide time about 1 hour. Approach: Limited parking at SH741769.
Follow the public footpath through woods to where it heads up towards Pen Pyra. From here contour around the hillside across Access land to the start of the arête just above a stone wall (SH743780). 20 minutes.

Route: Follow the obvious ridge, keeping close to the edge. The situation and views are spectacular. The compact limestone rock is slippery when wet and possibilities for protection are limited. Nevertheless there is an abundance of positive, incut holds and the quality of the rock is surprisingly good, with only a few loose blocks to contend with (particularly on the very edge of the arête).

There is some vegetation – mostly gorse bushes. Most of the scrambling is of Grade 1/2 standard with difficulties confined to four steep steps along the ridge. A rope and some protection for these steps would be advisable, if you can find any placements (slings and small wires required). The final step, at about three-quarters height, is the largest and hardest.

From the level section of ridge below walk left for a few feet around a semi-detached block and then step up and trend right using awkward slanting holds. A small wire in a crack above will give some protection. Belay on the ridge just above. Beyond, Grade 1 scrambling remains.

Descent: Descend with care the scree slope to the right (facing in) of the arête. In some respects this is more dangerous than the route itself – some large boulders are highly unstable.
