Great Hangman Gut.

This route was last climbed on 02.03.06. The description below is how it was that day. Do not assume that the gully, which is constantly changing has remained in the same condition. All measurements are estimates.

Other than descending the gut the best way to reach the bottom is to follow the stream down Sherrycombe to the waterfall. SS 608483. Only take this route on the low water of a spring tide, check the tide tables. Carefully move down onto the rocks at the top of the waterfall and find the fixed sling which has been there a while? Abseil 80ft down the right/east side of the fall.

Before you pull the rope down check the beach is not flooded 250metres west of the waterfall. It is then an easy scramble along the beach to the foot of the gully and the highest sea cliffs in England. Start at the left side of the gully where the loose red shale slope is shorter and more secure.

After 75ft the slope becomes firm on the left but there is a lack of belays until the large boulder at 210ft. On top and at the rear of the boulder there is a shallow rock spike belay. The remaining 1070ft is a steep and strenuous walk up the left side using sheep tracks where possible. At the final grass slope climb up diagonally left.
